I know I can't possibly have much to say about this film as there is only a trailer, a plot and a poster but I want to get it on the record. I first heard about this film more than a year ago. I heard three things. 1. Michael Mann. 2. Johnny Depp. 3. John Dillinger. That's pretty much all I needed to hear until I then later heard 4. Christian Bale.
Now I've been told from people who know that Michael Mann is a prick. I have no idea. I've never met the guy. I love his films and I'm really not even the type of wanna-be director who is engulfed in favorite Directors. It's just not my style. I do however, love this guys films. I mean, 'Heat'? 'Collateral'. I think Miami Vice was a misstep, but not by much. Anyway, this guy knows Chicago. And this guy knows a subject like John Dillinger. If anything, I'm pissed because I am still dying for the chance to make a great mob movie and I know this one is going to be it. I am going to go on record right here and say I will be surprised if this film isn't considered an early Oscar contender.
Simply put, Michael Mann is a good director and this subject is right up his alley. Johnny Depp, well, speaks for himself. The guy is a chameleon with style, able to be everything crazy like Sweeney Todd or Jack Sparrow but also cool and amazing in 'Finding Neverland' and my personal favorite, 'The Libertine'. He is just as awesome with the makeup as he is without. Sometimes, without all the bells and whistles, I think he is even more mesmerizing.
Now I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, oh, she, like every girl, has a crush on Johnny Depp. You're not wrong, but I have a crush on his talent. The same one I have for Christian Bale. Love him or hate him (after the whole yelling thing, which I personally loved) these guys are f'ng talented people. They both metamorphosize without losing who they are and without compromising themselves within the character.
With that being said, I'm sure Marion Cotillard will be fantastic. Also you have LeeLee Sobieski and Emilie de Ravin who are no joke. I can hardly even write at the thought of all the right people in this movie. I mean, the poster of Johnny Depp that's out right now... it looks spot on. I'll say that. He looks like he was born to play John Dillinger and I am really looking forward to it.
So, I don't have much to add. I think this film is an early Oscar contender and I think all the buzz over the trailer helps to support my theory. But, this was my theory before the trailer. This was my theory even before anyone other than Depp, Mann and Bale were involved and I'm sticking to it. If you weren't planning on giving this film a chance, I hope you reconsider. And later on when it's nominated, I hope you'll remember me.
